About Utah Campus Compact
Established in 1996, Utah Campus Compact is a coalition of college and university presidents and their campuses. It is one of 35 state compacts nationwide. Utah Campus Compact provides training, technical assistance, networking opportunities, and support to faculty, staff, students, and administrators working in the areas of service-learning, co-curricular service, and community-based research.
History
In the early 1990s, institutions of higher education in Utah were loosely organized in the Serving Utah Network (SUN), which sought to strengthen community service and learning at each of the state’s colleges and universities. During 1994-1995 a long-range planning committee convened to determine the feasibility of forming a state compact. In August of 1995, Utah became the 18th state to join the national Campus Compact network.
Guiding Principles
Utah Campus Compact is guided by the following principles:
- Civic Responsibility. We believe in the principles of our constitutional democracy and of higher education’s responsibility to foster the skills of citizenship in a global society.
- Service. We believe service within one’s community is a mark of good citizenship.
- Collaboration. We believe collaboration at all levels of our work is critical to our success.
- Inclusiveness. We believe there is strength in diversity and that all voices should be heard and all contributions considered as we move our work forward.
- Flexibility. We believe that our member institutions should define and advance civic engagement as it makes sense for each campus and its surrounding community.
- Strengths Perspective. We believe that focusing on the strengths and assets of individuals and communities is the most productive path to accomplishing our goals.
