UTAH'S HIGHER EDUCATION CIVIC ENGAGEMENT COALITION
About UCC Member Institutions Programs and Events Resources Awards Contact Us About Utah Campus Compact

Utah Campus Compact is a coalition of 12 Utah college and university presidents and their campuses. Utah Campus Compact is one of 35 state compacts nationwide. This organization service private and public higher education institutions, helping them develop a shared commitment to the public purpose of higher education and the value of integrating service with learning.

Utah Campus Compact (UCC) is unique among its peers: all public colleges and universities in the state participate and two private institutions, and all of the presidents of these institutions serve on the UCC Board of Directors.  Given this support, UCC is in a position to realize its vision and mission statements through a well-crafted set of goals, objectives, and services.

Vision
Utah Campus Compact envisions a future in which Utah’s colleges and universities collaborate with engaged citizens throughout the state to address the needs of our diverse communities. Utah Campus Compact sees itself playing a crucial role in that future--connecting, supporting, and leading higher education as it creates a better-educated, more engaged citizenry for a more prosperous and democratic society.

Mission
Utah Campus Compact links and supports Utah’s colleges and universities in promoting civic engagement and preparing students for responsible citizenship.

Guiding Principles
Utah Campus Compact is guided by the following principles: Civic Responsibility. We believe in the principles of our constitutional democracy and of higher education’s responsibility to foster the skills of citizenship in a global society. Service. We believe service within one’s community is a mark of good citizenship. Collaboration. We believe collaboration at all levels of our work is critical to our success. Inclusiveness. We believe there is strength in diversity and that all voices should be heard and all contributions considered as we move our work forward. Flexibility. We believe that our member institutions should define and advance civic engagement as it makes sense for each campus and its surrounding community. Strengths Perspective. We believe that focusing on the strengths and assets of individuals and communities is the most productive path to accomplishing our goals.

Objectives
To help its member institutions achieve the UCC strategic goals, UCC will pursue the following objectives:

  • provide statewide leadership, coordination, and advocacy for civic engagement;
  • serve as a “connector” by convening member institutions, providing networking opportunities, and serving as a liaison with National Campus Compact;
  • facilitate training; and
  • promote best practices
UCC and Member Institution Interaction
In keeping with its guiding principles, in particular the principle of flexibility, UCC recognizes that its member institutions will define and advance civic engagement as it makes sense for their campus and surrounding community. Similarly, UCC recognizes that the decision to participate in statewide higher education initiatives rests with individual institutions.  This chart depicts a model of the way in which UCC and member institutions interact relative to their vision, mission and activities. Where there is overlap between UCC’s work and that of member institutions, UCC and member institutions will work together to achieve common goals. However, all member institutions are free to pursue civic engagement initiatives that are most appropriate for them. Finally, UCC and member institutions will collaborate, share information and experiences in a way that enriches the work of all members and UCC.
